The 17th annual meeting of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) was held in the beautiful PKIN conference centre where the elegant and surprisingly calm surroundings contrasted with this busy and vibrant meeting.

Topics discussed during the conference included nanotechnology, digital imaging and planning, implantology in the young and old, and basic research.

Astra Tech had a large presence at the meeting with a booth designed to Get inspired. The large amount of scientific data behind the success of Astra Tech Implant System™ was on display. Recent long-term data has led implant specialists to the conclusion that Astra Tech “sets a new standard” for bone level reduction of only 0.3 mm – three times better than the industry norm.

The EAO meeting was the stage for the European launch of our Atlantis™ patient-specific abutments, a patented method for digitally producing abutments using the latest CAD/CAM technology. In the Inspirational Centre, Dr. Julian Osorio, one of the inventors of Atlantis™, gave presentations on how this technology provides outstanding function and aesthetics using simple procedures, saving the dentist time, effort and money.

More recent, innovative implant solutions were also presented including the narrow and short implants for use in more challenging dental cases, such as bone resorption or suboptimal anatomy.

There was a large emphasis on interactivity with hands-on workshops and live demonstrations from Speaker's Corner. Delegates could also get a DVD containing the scientific programme from the hugely successful Astra Tech World Congress held in Washington, DC earlier this year.

Astra Tech Satellite Symposium

The A Good Evening with Astra Tech satellite symposium was a great success. All 450 seats were taken before the meeting started and it was standing room only.

The title of the meeting was Digital dentistry – yet the toothbrush saves the day and was chaired by Professor Jan Lindhe.

Professor Stefan Haßfeld gave an overview of how digital technology is being incorporated into every stage of implantology, from the initial planning stages through follow-up.

The advantages and disadvantages of digital technology within dentistry were then assessed by Professor Clark Stanford. He highlighted the Atlantis™ solution from Astra Tech as providing precision and flexibility in the creation of customised abutments.

Finally, Professor Jan Lindhe presented three studies showing the effectiveness of Astra Tech implants in cases of treated periodontitis, and where implants were placed in fresh extraction sockets.
